Professor Sadahiro SUZUKI, MA. PhD

Professor. (Comparative Studies of Japanese Arts and Cultures)

Comparative Studies of Japanese Culture (Hikaku-Nihon-Bunka-Ron) is an approach to understanding Japanese culture and history in the context of world cultural traditions and world history.

Our way of thinking is culturally and historically conditioned. At the moment we regard something as Japanese, we presume the existence of something non-Japanese. The distinction of these two could - and may well - take place almost automatically, as political, historical, cultural and social customs are already interwoven into our mental processes, and they compose the framework of our thinking. Nobody is free from these limitations, as nobody can even think without them, i.e. what we call “common sense.”

The theory of Comparative Culture suggests first challenging these kinds of conventions by making reference to the possibility of other frameworks or cultural values, and, secondly, rediscovering the significance of the culture to which he or she thinks they belong. The gulf between “our” culture and “other” cultures is not necessarily apparent, because, as we have already seen, the “otherness” of “others” depends on the definition and regulation of “us.” On the other hand, the gulf can still be deep, as we need to belong to a group for survival, and questioning the prerequisite conditions of such a community can be a danger to the group. It is, however, also true that the formation and composition of a community cannot be comprehensible without understanding the characteristics of the principles regulating such a group.

This is the reason why those who wish to study Japanese culture need to study non-Japanese cultures and foreign languages. As long as we pursue a Comparative Cultural approach, we need to make an effort to maintain relative perspectives on cultures. We keep on moving, like a pendulum, between different cultures, so that we assess “our” culture from the viewpoint of “others,” whereas we deepen our understanding of “others” by making reference to “ours.” This process requires mental toughness, but it is surely a way for higher cultivation of the mind and insights into cultures.

My research subjects so far are as follows: (1) Aspects of “Art for Life‘s Sake” in Modern and Contemporary Japanese Cultural Scenes; (2) The History of the British Studio Craft Movement (mainly in the field of ceramics); and (3) A Mental Map of Modern Japan: A History of World Views Conceived by Modern Japan in the Period between 1905 and 1945.

「ハンカチ」とは「小型・方形の手ふき布」(『広辞苑』)であるのに対し、 "handkerchief"は"a small piece of material or paper that you use for blowing your nose, etc."(鼻をかむさいなどに用いる、一片のものまたは紙)(Oxford 英英辞典)です。
